1. Vinesh Phogat loses chance to get Olympic Medal because of being 100gm overweight
For the last two days, Indian national media, social media platforms have been abuzz with the news that Vinesh Phogat loses her chance to get the olympic medal. She had stormed into the final of 50KG weight category olympic finals. She was slated to be the first Indian woman wrestler to do so till date. She was performing so well that the whole nation felt that the 'Gold Medal' will be hers soon. However as they say that 'Man proposes, God disposes' and this came true on the day of her final bout where she was disqualified for being overweight.
The Noise
The media caught the citizens attention by flashing the news
It was a perfect storm especially for a country like India which purely operates on emotions. Protests , support and anguish outpoured in from all quarters. The Indian PMO and PM himself got involved.
What was the response to this disappointment
The responses varied in extremes. There are few who criticised Vinesh for fighting in a category lower than her ideal body weight. There are many others who feel there is a conspiracy to make her lose and some feel that there are people involved right upto Olympics who have done this grave injustice to the wrestler intentionally.
Indian Opposition Parties Member Of Parliaments Walked Out- The politicians of India took an extreme step where the opposition parties walked out of parliamentary proceedings citing Indian Government did not support the national hero.
However the Indian Government setup did appeal to wrestling committee at Paris Olympics to reconsidered their decision. The response as reported by Indian Express is given below carrying response from Wrestling's governing body.
Vinesh Phogat : Immediate Response To Disappointment
The wrestler faced a tough time throughout the night where she and her medical team worked hard to get her weight down. She cycled, jogged and reduced water intake. However all that was vain as she got disqualified.
She was disappointed as her quest for Olympic Medal which was her dream got shattered. She was so close to the dream till a night prior and all of that suddenly became so distant.
How did she manage her disappointment? SHE ANNOUNCED RETIREMENT.
2. Disappointments will definitely come : Learn best strategies to manage them
The case of Vinesh Phogat shows us clearly that disappointments will come in life whether we like it or not. We can go on endlessly saying "Why Me", "It will never happen to me" , "Why it is happening again & again" & "Why Now". but the truth is that there is no control over stopping disappointments from occurring. We can however explore ways to reduce them & manage them efficiently so that they do not impact your well being.
Let us look into such ways as given below:-
Filter The Noise To See The Reality
When disappointment comes in , we all get shrouded by noise. Like in the case of Vinesh Phogat cited above above. There is so much talk of being 100gm overweight and this is making nation's heart cringe with pain however on close examination of facts, we can see that in reality the wrestler was 2.1 Kg overweight on the day of weigh in . The permissible limit was 2Kg. She already was above the limit in her weight category. It is unfortunate that on the day of final she went above the permissible limit but 'IT IS WHAT IT IS' .
The moment we see the news in this context-the pain becomes less as we see the reality and accept it too.
Blame No One : There Is No End To It
There is no end to the blame game. To the credit of the wrestler, she has not come out blaming the world for the sad turn of events. She is a fighter, great sports person with amazing determination and that is why , she will always know IF IT IS TO BE THEN IT IS ALL UPTO HER. Only she is responsible for her failure or success. That differentiates a Leader from the crowd.
See The Silver Lining & Do Not Be Harsh On You
You may have lost today but you also need to see that what brought you here. There must be something right that you would have done. You need to remind yourself about that. One needs to see the silver lining.
I am sure Vinesh will see it too. She defeated the unbeatable Japanese (2020-Olympics Gold Medalist) champion and went on to storm into the 50Kg Paris Olympics finals. This is after she had faced an exit in 2020 Tokyo Olympics and underwent some unruly controversial events in last year. Despite all struggles, injuries & troubles etc, Vinesh Phogat won the heart of the nation.
Be empathetic to yourself. Please do not be too harsh on yourself. Self Pity is a NO NO. You need to love yourself first before expecting the world to do so.
Breathe & Let It Go
Life is a drama and we all have our part to play in it. We must act our parts well. At the moment when we are in the thick of disappointment, it will definitely be tough but sooner or later , we would realise that we need to 'Let It Go'. A simple breathe in and breathe out will help us do that.
This technique will always finish the anguish and definitely lessen the same at the moment. Your mind always will try to bring you back to the moment of anguish by replaying the movie etc. but if you are a champion then you will recognise the drama of life and put a stop to it.
3. Control What You Can : Forget The Rest
Always remember that you can do only what you can control and in situations where disappointment hits, you have to forget the elements which are beyond you. Focus only on the steps that are possible to be taken at your end considering your capabilities at that moment while you handle your disappointment.
Be sympathetic to you, have faith in yourself as you are DIVINE. All what you did in terms of your hard work, commitment & sacrifice made you grow. You may miss the medal but will never part with the lesson. You would grow in your life because of that lesson.
Remember you may have lost or failed in an event in your life and not in the life itself. The fire within you cannot be that sub standard that one small storm extinguishes the flame.
Keep moving forward as that is the only way to live.....
Have a great week ahead.
